A socket weld tee is a three-way pipe fitting used to branch one pipe from another in a piping system.
Socket weld (S/W) means the pipes are inserted into the sockets of the tee and then fillet welded around the joint.
Tee allows for flow in a T-shaped configuration:
One inlet
Two outlets (or vice versa)
Common Grades:
| Grade | Properties |
|---|---|
| SS 304 | General corrosion resistance for moderate applications |
| SS 316 | High corrosion resistance, suitable for marine, chemical, or acidic media |
| SS 316L | Low carbon version, better for welding and high corrosion environments |
Properties:
Corrosion-resistant
High mechanical strength
Suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature systems
Compatible with steam, water, oil, chemicals, and corrosive fluids
Structure:
T-shaped fitting with three sockets (one for each pipe).
Pipes are inserted into the sockets, leaving a small gap (typically 1/16”–1/8”) for welding.
Fillet weld is made around the outer edge of each socket.
Standards:
ASME B16.11 for socket weld fittings
ANSI/ASME standards for pressure and dimensions
Dimensions:
Based on nominal pipe size (NPS)
Wall thickness follows Schedule 40 or 80, depending on pressure class
